Jacob Murphy, a Manufacturing Assistant at KBI Biopharma, is set to be celebrated at an upcoming event hosted by the North Carolina Biotechnology Center (NCBiotech). As KBI's primary liaison with local community colleges and biotech training programs, NCBiotech plays a crucial role in connecting the company with local talent eager to build careers in the biopharmaceutical industry. Jacob’s journey to biopharmaceutical manufacturing exemplifies the success of this collaboration. Through its partnership with NCBiotech, KBI can tap into a pipeline of skilled professionals like Jacob, equipped with the training and expertise needed to thrive in biopharma.
A Career Pivot with Purpose
Before joining KBI, Jacob led a technician team at a local power washing company. His days were spent coordinating jobs, ensuring high-quality service, and managing a small team. The work was hands-on and taught him invaluable lessons in leadership, attention to detail, and maintaining high-quality standards. However, despite his success in the role, Jacob found himself interested in pursuing a different job path — a career with a deeper impact.
"My motivation to enter the biopharmaceutical field stemmed from a desire to contribute to an industry that makes a tangible difference in people’s lives," Jacob shares. Conversations with friends and industry professionals provided valuable insights and confirmed his decision. With encouragement from those around him, Jacob set his sights on a new path.
Navigating the Transition
Jacob discovered the training opportunities in North Carolina through a friend who worked in the industry. This connection proved pivotal in helping him navigate the available programs and decide which one to enroll in. He ultimately decided to pursue the BioWork certificate program at Central Carolina Community College and learn the foundational skills to become a process technician for a biotechnology, pharmaceutical, or chemical manufacturing company.
The training and development he gained set Jacob up for success. "They provided a robust foundation in both the technical skills and the mindset required for success in a cGMP [current Good Manufacturing Practice] environment," he affirms. "The hands-on experience was particularly beneficial, equipping me with the confidence and competence needed for my current role." While he recalls initially adapting to the stringent protocols and procedures as challenging, he shares that it was rewarding to see how quickly he could rise to the new standards. The program also offered Jacob invaluable opportunities to network with industry professionals, further solidifying his decision to enter the field.
A New Role with Impact
Through those networking opportunities, Jacob became aware of KBI. He was introduced to Gene Lofton, Manufacturing Manager of Training and Development at our Patriot Park site, and the rest fell into place. He learned about KBI's commitment to fostering a supportive community and emphasizing employee growth and development. "The company's dedication to nurturing its talent and providing a conducive environment for professional advancement strongly resonated with me," Jacob says. When it was time to start work, he expressed how supportive Gene was in his onboarding and development. “His support was crucial in helping me start my career at KBI,” he adds.
As a Manufacturing Assistant, he is now responsible for tasks vital to the company’s operations. His role includes routine and non-routine cleanings that ensure the manufacturing environment remains sterile — an essential factor in producing safe and effective therapies. Additionally, Jacob manages the supplies on the production floor, requiring meticulous attention to detail to maintain operational efficiency. “What I value most about KBI is the profound sense of purpose in our work,” he says. “Knowing what we do here contributes to developing life-saving therapies is incredibly rewarding.”
Jacob’s transition into the biopharmaceutical industry has dramatically impacted his personal and professional life. Professionally, it has opened doors to a dynamic and growing industry in North Carolina. Personally, it has given him a renewed sense of purpose and direction. His role has allowed Jacob to apply the skills he learned during his training and thrive in an environment where his contributions are recognized and valued.
Looking Forward
As Jacob reflects on his journey, he is filled with both pride and a sense of responsibility. The recognition from NCBiotech is, to him, a validation of his hard work and determination. “Being recognized like this is profoundly validating,” he proudly says. “It motivates me to keep striving for excellence.”
Looking ahead, Jacob has ambitious plans. He aims to grow within KBI Biopharma, expand his industry knowledge, and possibly pursue further education to deepen his expertise. “I see myself growing by embracing new challenges, continuously learning, and contributing to impactful projects,” he shares.
Jacob also quickly expresses gratitude to those who supported him along the way. He acknowledges the guidance of his colleagues, the support of his girlfriend, and the friends who helped him navigate the early stages of his career transition. Their belief in him has been a cornerstone of his journey. He is also grateful for NCBiotech, particularly Chase Barnhill, who first connected Jacob with KBI while he was navigating his career search.
Jacob's journey reflects the transformative power of opportunity and the impact of meaningful work. His advice for those interested in pursuing a career in the biopharmaceutical industry? "Embrace training opportunities, network extensively, and seek out mentors," he recommends. "Curiosity and a willingness to learn are crucial, so maintain an open mind and stay dedicated to your goals."
